Volunteer of the Week: Marty Cobern

by | Jan 21, 2026 | Stories, Volunteering

Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen will mark 40 years of service to the New Haven community next year – and for over a fourth of that time, Marty Cobern has been a volunteer for DESK. Marty was even among the first volunteers at our new Drop-in and Resource Center! To kick off our volunteer spotlight series, we want to recognize Marty for all that he has done for DESK!

Marty serves our guests every Monday in our cafe, helping them get a cup of hot coffee and a snack, and because he comes so regularly, he makes strong personal relationships with the people we serve. Those relationships are what make DESK special to Marty. “We get to treat our guests as individuals. I particularly like their ordering coffee, with very specific preferences: flavor, type of sweetener, etc. This may be the only time and place where they have agency.  Here, they aren’t being told what to eat, where and when to sleep,” he says.

.

Why continue to volunteer at DESK for over ten years? For Marty, it’s all because of the great work that DESK does. He has watched DESK make an impact on guests’ lives. He says that “If you are looking for an organization that makes real changes in the lives of its clients, changes that you can witness first-hand, DESK is the place for you” – and he certainly knows that, having seen dozens of success stories in the time he’s volunteered.

Beyond volunteering every week, Marty hosts and attends DESK events, and every year he hosts a Facebook fundraiser for his birthday supporting DESK. Outside of DESK, Marty is a committed member of the Greater New Haven community! He serves as an Associate Fellow at Yale’s Trumbull College and co-leads weekly Torah study at Temple Beth David in Cheshire.

Marty is part of the fabric at DESK, and we couldn’t do transformative work without the commitment from volunteers like Marty. If Marty’s story inspires you, consider getting involved with DESK through volunteering, donating, or hosting a drive.
